1,000 Words

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then I must have a lot to say. Or is it not what I want to say but what you need to hear. That is the beauty of art, one photograph, one painting or one sculpture speaks a different thousand words to each of us. Art speaks the universal language in our own dialect. There is freedom in art and it is alive. Art is life and life rules.

This is my "sketch" book and I share it with you.

My Color Theory

If it looks good then do it If it says what you want it to then let it say it There are no rules, no boundries just imagination.

When I was a child I used to love to draw houses and trees. Country type scenes, maybe it's because I grew up in the city. I drew this flash from the past in tiny little circles. I have always thought it was an interesting technique but have never really taken the time to develop it. Honestly I kind of forgot about it until now. Perhaps I will work on it some more. It has a great potential. I think the thing I like about it the most is that it isn't exact which forces it to keep a childlike quality about it. Yet at the same time you could draw some incredibly detailed pieces.

Might

It might be possible for an ant to pick and walk away with an Aston Martin and I might one day be able to buy one. This image was created completely in Photoshop.

Turkey Shoot (Thanksgiving)

I think I was feeling just a little cynical this week. And I really didn't want to make another pilgrim eating turkey picture. There are a few "turkeys" I would like to shoot in the ass and I was feeling some hostility towards them. Then I got to thinking that if I was a turkey I would try to hide so I wouldn't become dinner. Well turkeys are not known for being the smartest fowl around and that combined with my hostile cynicism created this.

On a serious note there is a lot to be thankful for and Thanksgiving is really the time to stop and ponder them. No matter how small it may seem. Sometimes, most of the times it is the small thing that is the most significant and what makes or breaks the day. I think it is human nature to focus on the one major thing that went wrong and not take notice of all the small things that go right, part of the mortal coil I guess. So on this day and everyday take extra notice of all the little things that are right and good in your life. I guarantee they will out weigh anything else. Happy Thanksgiving and pass the cranberry sauce.

Purple Daisies for Miss Z

I don't know what made me think of it but I was called to mind of my first argument over creative difference. I was kindergarten, no you didn't read that wrong. I was a strong willed child to put it nicely. Anyway, we were coloring a picture of trees and grass. When I decided that I wanted to make my tree's leaves purple. I was just about to start coloring when Miss Z ( her name was too long for any 5 year old to pronounce) popped her head over my shoulder and said that trees are green. Like I said I was a strong willed child and I told her that some trees were purple. For a moment she lost her sanity and began to argue with a child. I wouldn't relent on my position that there were purple trees and she walked off with the order that I will make the tree green.

I am sure her reason was to teach us that trees are green and the sun is yellow ect. What she didn't know was that the area I lived in was filled with purple leaved trees. Several of our neighbors and my babysitter had one or two. And there was this street on the way to my aunts house ( I think) that was lined on both sides of them. She made the assumption that because she had never seen it and I was five that I didn't know what I was talking about.

However, that rational didn't occur to me then. I just wanted to use the purple crayon. I wanted my picture to be different from the other 31 pictures that are just like it. I had an artistic vision ( well as much of one that a five year old could have) and this lady was messing with it.
I made the tree purple any ways and I got a letter home say that I was not behaving very well again. My mother was not amused by my behavior but she liked my coloring.

So, I think the lesson for us artists is that when we take to creating our next masterpiece is to let go and paint it as we feel it. Even if it means breaking convention and get sent home with a note.
